Why do all people claim on democracy so desperately? It’s because democracy can guarantee fairness and the human rights of the nations. In a democracy, the government is being supervised by the nations, everyone has the right to choose their government and the policies, that means they can choose their way to live, and there is nobody to rule the country at his will, freedom of every citizen is not violated.

On the contrary, civilians under arbitrary ruling are no better than puppets. They are being manipulated more than living their own lives, just like how the people lived in China thirty years ago, every nation should not speak of anything bad about the Communist Party. Freedom is limited in variable ways, and every nation could not deny the policies of the government. Fortunately, democracy is the current trend in the world, and recently there was an event which once again drew our attention to this issue.

        About two weeks ago, there was a demonstration for democracy held by the Buddhist monks and other anti-government protesters in Myanmar, but it finally turned out into a bloody crackdown.

        We might think, ‘How could the protestors be so stupid? They should’ve known the Myanmar junta would stop them in any way, even killing people, just like what they did in 1988.’ But what we saw was that about 100000 people took to the streets of Yangon, with civilians far outnumbering monks, despite fears of a repeat of the ruthless suppression of Myanmar’s last major uprising.

From this scene, we see how the nations are determined to call for democracy. The governments all over the world shall not turn their deaf ears to the nations on this issue anymore. If the democratic crusade succeeds in Burma, then it may give faith to the other democrats in the dictatorships around the world and kick the feudal governments.

        National Geographic is a kind of documentary which tells a variety of topics in each episode. Sometime it’s about the cultures of different races, sometime it’s about Biology, it’s a very good program for us to learn the knowledge that we can’t acquire in schools.

       The episode I watched this Saturday was about bats. In the opening, it started by relating some legends about vampires. Then it played a gloomy background to make it feel mysterious and a bit creepy. All these effects made it feel like a drama and made it quite different from other general documentaries, it’s because the general documentaries are usually dull.

        In this episode, it introduced the habit of bats. For example, what they eat, where they live and so on. I think this episode didn’t tell deep enough, as it just told about two kinds of bats and the content this time was like common sense(just like telling us that bats suck blood and live in caves). Maybe it’s a problem of time limit.

Although the content was not substantial enough, there were so many wonderful scenes through out the entire show, I wonder how the cameramen did that. There was a scene of a bat getting stuck on a spider web and being eaten by a spider. When I saw that, I think ‘did they really wait nearby the web for a whole night?’

Overall, I think this National Geographic is not bad, it’s worth eight out of ten points. Besides being instructive, what the narrator says is not difficult to understand. It provides a good opportunity to practice listening skills, so I think National Geographic is a recommendable program.
